The Kindle doesnt support ePub, and PDFs alone are not always formatted. These more versatile devices generally run Android, meaning that they can access Kindle libraries via Amazon’s app on top of easily loading up DRM-free files. I could easily transfer files to my Kindle over USB, but I wanted more than that.
I know that with mobi I can convert it and replace the DOC tag Advertisement Coins. Meanwhile competitors like Onyx, Xiaomi, and Pocketbook have been offering tons of new tech and form factors. When I send an epub book to my kindle it displays it as a document.
AZW and its predecessors are essentially the same as MOBI, but with a different name and DRM (Digital Rights Management) scheme. Kindle models have iterated in teeny-tiny increments for years, only gaining USB-C charging support on the latest models. After 2022, Amazon not only recommends you use the EPUB format instead, but officially will not allow you to upload MOBI to KDP or sideload MOBI onto your Kindle devices. This is entirely speculative on my part, but it seems to me that the widening market of ebook readers is making Amazon sweat a little.
